Introduction
Windy Heights is a quintile 2, no-fee primary school located in the Malukazi area, just outside Isipingo in Durban’s southern suburbs. It operates within the Phumelela Circuit and Umlazi District. The school was established to serve a diverse local population and address the educational needs of the community.
Founding and Development
The school’s origins date back to the mid-1980s, driven by local senior citizens who recognized the urgent need for a new educational institution. Spearheaded by Mr. Dawood Kader, these efforts involved negotiations with the Provincial Department of Education. Their successful advocacy led to securing land for the school, generously donated by Maurice Fayers, a local landowner.
Opening and Growth
Windy Heights opened its doors in 1989, offering classes from Grade R to Grade 7. Initially, it was among the most privileged schools of its time. However, with evolving technology and educational demands, the school has continually adapted to maintain modernity. Today, it serves nearly 1900 students.
Current Community and Vision
The student body primarily comes from Malukazi and surrounding areas such as Umlazi Township, Umbumbulu, Ezimbokodweni, Folweni, KwaMakhutha, and Lotus Park. The school follows a five-year plan aimed at improving the educational standards and providing better future opportunities for the community.
Educational Approach
The school prioritizes literacy and offers a range of programs beyond the standard curriculum. These include extra reading classes, library programs, and extracurricular activities to enhance students' skills and interests. This holistic approach addresses the challenges faced by students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Impact and Legacy
Over the decades, Windy Heights has significantly contributed to the local economy by producing graduates who are now influential in various career fields.
